New Delhi, March 24, 2026 — US President Donald Trump spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday to discuss the evolving situation in the Middle East, with both leaders underscoring the strategic importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, according to the US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor. Gor said in a post on X that the two leaders discussed the ongoing regional crisis, including the need to ensure that the key energy route remains accessible.
The conversation came amid rising tensions in West Asia and mounting global concern over disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints for oil and gas supplies. The route is central to global energy security, and continued instability there has rattled markets and raised concerns for import-dependent countries such as India.

Prime Minister Modi has also publicly stressed the importance of keeping the strait open. In his remarks in the Rajya Sabha on March 24, he said India remains in contact with the leadership of Iran, Israel and the United States, and warned that the ongoing conflict could create serious economic and humanitarian consequences. He described uninterrupted access through the Strait of Hormuz as essential for global stability.

The Trump-Modi call came a day after Trump announced a five-day pause on planned US strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure, claiming there had been productive contacts with Iranian interlocutors. Iran has denied that any negotiations are underway and accused Washington of spreading misleading claims.
The crisis has already prompted intensified diplomatic outreach. Earlier this month, Modi also spoke with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, with both leaders agreeing on the need to ensure safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
The latest Trump-Modi exchange underlines the close strategic coordination between Washington and New Delhi at a time of deepening regional uncertainty. With energy flows under pressure and the security situation still volatile, India is expected to continue pushing for de-escalation, maritime stability and the protection of its economic interests in the Gulf.
