Congress leader Rahul Gandhi challenged Modi to confront Trump directly over the US leader’s ceasefire statements and call him a liar if he was making false claims.

New Delhi, July 29, 2025 — Just hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured the Lok Sabha that no global leader had asked India to halt military operations during Operation Sindoor, former US President Donald Trump repeated his longstanding claim — for the 30th time in ten weeks — that he personally negotiated a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
Speaking to reporters on trade tariffs, Trump said:
“India is my friend. They ended the war with Pakistan at my request… The deal is not finalised, but India has charged some of the highest tariffs in the world.”

The timing of Trump’s remarks, coming immediately after Modi’s forceful assertion of India’s autonomy in military decision-making, could prove diplomatically awkward. Despite repeated challenges by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Modi avoided naming Trump during his fiery Parliament address.
When asked if India is going to pay high tariffs, between 20-25%, US President Donald Trump says, “Yeah, I think so. India is my friend. They ended the war with Pakistan at my request…The deal with India is not finalised. India has been a good friend, but India has charged… pic.twitter.com/ioyIaDS8Xo

PM Modi: ‘India Acted Alone’
Responding to Opposition criticism and the ongoing debate over India’s military operation following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, PM Modi declared that India responded with “full autonomy and no external interference.”
“No leader in the world asked us to stop Operation Sindoor,” Modi said, recounting how he had declined a call from US Vice President JD Vance on May 9 as he was in a meeting with military leaders.
“Later, when I returned the call, he warned of a possible Pakistani retaliation. I told him Pakistan will have to pay a heavy price,” Modi stated.

Modi credited the armed forces for avenging the Pahalgam killings within 22 minutes, describing the operation as swift, precise, and unrelenting. He added that his government gave the military a “free hand,” and took a jab at Pakistani PM Shehbaz Sharif’s public admission that he was “swimming” when India’s missiles struck.
“Our missiles reached the depths of Pakistan — places they never imagined. We made them bend,” he said.
Rahul Gandhi: ‘Tell Trump He’s Lying’
Speaking ahead of the Prime Minister, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi launched a blistering attack on Modi’s credibility, asking why Trump’s repeated ceasefire claims have gone unchallenged.
“Donald Trump said 29 times that he stopped the war. If that is not true, then say it to Trump’s face — tell him he’s lying,” Rahul said, invoking former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assertiveness.
He accused the government of hiding behind nationalism while avoiding direct confrontation with powerful global voices.
“If Trump’s claim is false, why no correction? Why the silence?” he asked.
