US President-elect Donald Trump has invited Florida Representative Mike Waltz, the leader of the India caucus, to serve as his National Security Advisor.
Mike Waltz, 50, is a former Army National Guard officer and war veteran, anticipated to adopt a hawkish stance on national security that closely matches Trump’s commitments to bolster American safety.
Waltz, a three-term GOP congressman from east-central Florida, was the inaugural Green Beret to be elected to the US House and was re-elected last week.
Waltz has served as the chairman of the House Armed Services subcommittee focused on readiness and has been a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee as well as the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, according to the news agency The Associated Press.
Waltz is a firm supporter of robust defense strategies, particularly regarding ties with India and addressing China. He is an experienced foreign policy specialist and strong advocate for a US-India partnership, promoting enhanced relations with India, especially in defense and security collaboration.
Significantly, Mike Waltz, as a co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans, was instrumental in organizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address at Capitol Hill during his trip to the US in 2023.

The India Caucus in the Senate is a bipartisan assembly that currently includes 40 Senate members. Established in 2004 by then-New York senator and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton along with Senator John Cornyn, it is the biggest Caucus of its type in the Senate.
Waltz has taken a tough stance on China, advocating for a US boycott of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics because of its role in the COVID-19 outbreak and its purported abuses of Uighur Muslims.
Waltz has openly criticized the outgoing US President Joe Biden administration’s choice to pull troops out of Afghanistan.
His possible appointment might represent a change toward a bolder US position on China and a more robust collaboration with India, an alliance that Waltz has persistently claimed is vital for regional stability and shared economic and security advantages.
