Trump credited tariffs with generating hundreds of billions of dollars and forcing countries to renegotiate trade deals, claiming the measures helped restore economic balance and strengthen America’s negotiating power.

February 25, 2026: US President Donald Trump strongly defended his tariff-driven trade strategy while sharply criticizing a recent judicial setback, insisting that his aggressive import duties remain essential to protecting American economic interests and reducing the tax burden on citizens.
In a major national address, Trump said tariffs had already generated massive revenues for the United States and helped reverse decades of trade imbalances that he claimed had weakened American industry and workers. He argued that foreign nations were now paying billions through import duties, strengthening the US economy and restoring its global leverage.
“As time goes by, I believe that tariffs, paid for by foreign countries, will substantially replace the modern-day system of income tax, taking a great financial burden off the people,” Trump said, reaffirming a central pillar of his economic agenda.
Trump says in front of the SCOTU Justices, who just ruled against them, that he will move forward on tariffs again without Congress.

Tariffs Central to Trade War Strategy
Trump described tariffs as the foundation of his broader economic and geopolitical strategy, saying they had forced trading partners to renegotiate agreements and contribute financially after years of benefiting disproportionately from US markets.
He said the tariffs had generated hundreds of billions of dollars in revenue while giving Washington greater negotiating power in securing favorable economic and strategic deals.
According to Trump, many countries had accepted revised trade arrangements under tariff pressure and continued to cooperate despite ongoing legal and political challenges.

Trump Slams Supreme Court Tariff Ruling
Trump directed sharp criticism at the Supreme Court of the United States after it struck down key elements of his tariff framework, calling the decision “very unfortunate” but vowing to press ahead with alternative measures.
He insisted the ruling would not weaken his administration’s trade agenda, saying new tariffs could be imposed under different legal authorities and warning foreign governments against assuming reduced pressure.
Trump also said many countries and corporations preferred to maintain existing agreements rather than risk facing tougher tariffs under revised policies.
Tariffs as Economic and Strategic Leverage
Beyond economic gains, Trump claimed tariffs had also strengthened America’s diplomatic position, arguing that the threat of trade penalties had helped secure concessions and maintain stability in key international relationships.
He emphasized that tariffs would remain a core instrument of US policy, both to generate revenue and to defend national interests in an increasingly competitive global environment.
Determined to Continue Protectionist Push
Since returning to office, Trump has pursued sweeping tariffs to reshape global trade, including reciprocal duties of up to 50 percent on imports from countries with large trade surpluses with the United States.
Even after the Supreme Court setback, Trump moved quickly to impose new tariffs under alternative legal authority, reinforcing his determination to continue his protectionist agenda.
The president said he remains confident that tariffs will continue strengthening the US economy, reducing reliance on income taxes, and ensuring long-term economic independence.
