The US President said his “tariff diplomacy” brought peace within 24 hours, calling it proof that trade pressure can solve global conflicts.

October 13: US President Donald Trump has claimed that his aggressive tariff strategy acted as a “real peacemaker” between India and Pakistan during their military confrontation earlier this year.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on his way to the Middle East—where he is expected to attend a summit finalizing a truce between Israel and Hamas—Trump said he had “solved” multiple global conflicts using tariffs as leverage.
“I settled a few wars just based on tariffs,” Trump said. “For example, between India and Pakistan. I told them, if you guys want to fight a war with nuclear weapons, I’m going to hit you both with massive tariffs—100, 150, maybe 200 percent. I had that thing settled in 24 hours. Without tariffs, it would never have been resolved.”

India has consistently denied Washington’s claims of involvement in Operation Sindoor or in brokering the subsequent ceasefire with Pakistan. New Delhi maintains that the truce, announced in May 2025, resulted from direct military-to-military dialogue without any foreign mediation.

I stopped the war between India and Pakistan. I threatened the leaders of both countries that if you go to war, I will slap tariffs from 100% to 200%.

Trump went on to suggest that the expected Gaza ceasefire would mark the eighth global conflict he has personally resolved. He hinted that his next focus could be on the escalating tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, quipping, “I hear there’s a war going on there, too. I told them it’ll have to wait till I’m back—I’m already fixing another one. I’m good at solving wars.”
On the Nobel Peace Prize
The President also lamented being overlooked for the Nobel Peace Prize, saying his record of conflict resolution “speaks for itself.”
“Some of these wars were going on for 30, 40 years, with millions killed,” he said. “And I got most of them done—some in a single day. That’s pretty good. But I didn’t do it for the Nobel. I did it to save lives.”
Despite his self-congratulatory tone, diplomatic sources in both New Delhi and Islamabad maintain that Trump’s claims of ending the India-Pakistan conflict through tariff pressure are unsubstantiated and exaggerated.
