A historic bridge spanning the Indrayani river fell apart in the Talegaon region of Pune on Sunday afternoon, carrying away around 15 to 20 individuals with the rapid current.
The bridge, which was in poor condition, had been closed to vehicle traffic for a while. Yet, during intense rainfall and increasing water levels, numerous individuals assembled on the structure to observe the surging river.
Five to six individuals have been saved from the river.
Initial reports indicate that the powerful water flow caused the bridge to collapse. Rescue and search missions have been initiated urgently, with local police and district administration teams actively involved in providing aid.
15 ambulances are presently at the spot to take care of the issue.
