Traffic in Delhi and Noida has come to a near standstill as farmers gather for the “Delhi Chalo” march, organized by the Bhartiya Kisan Parishad (BKP) and other farmer groups from 20 districts.
The protest, aimed at urging the central government to address key demands, has caused significant disruption across the region. Visuals from the area show severe congestion, particularly at the Chilla border, where vehicles are inching along, and on the DND flyway, where traffic has come to a complete halt.
In response, Noida Police issued a traffic advisory, suggesting alternate routes to mitigate the chaos. Commuters heading from the Chilla border to Greater Noida have been directed via Sector 14A flyover and other diversions, while routes from the DND border and Kalindi border to Delhi have also been redirected. Similarly, traffic from Greater Noida towards Delhi is being routed through Kalindi Kunj or other points, with additional measures in place for vehicles traveling along the Yamuna Expressway and Peripheral Expressway.
The protest, set to begin at 12 PM from the Mahamaya flyover, will see farmers marching on foot and driving tractors toward the Parliament complex. BKP leader Sukhbir Khalifa emphasized that the march is to demand increased compensation for land acquisitions, rehabilitation benefits for the children of landless farmers, and the implementation of existing government orders addressing these issues. Farmers from districts including Gautam Buddha Nagar, Bulandshahr, Aligarh, and Agra are participating in what is expected to be a significant demonstration.
- Demands:
- Allocation of 10% plots and 64.7% increased compensation under the old acquisition law.
- Compensation at four times the market rate for land acquired after January 1, 2014, with 20% of the land allocated as plots.
- Employment and rehabilitation benefits for children of landless farmers.
- Implementation of government orders passed by the High Power Committee.
- Proper settlement of populated areas.
Security Measures and Route Diversions
- Security: Barriers are in place at Noida-Delhi borders, with heightened security at Chilla, DND Border, and Mahamaya Flyover. Numerous checkpoints have been set up along the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway.
- Restricted Access: Goods vehicles are barred from routes connecting Yamuna Expressway to Delhi via Noida-Greater Noida Expressway and Sirsa to Surajpur via Pari Chowk.
- Additional Diversions:
- Greater Noida to Delhi traffic diverted via Hajipur underpass and Sector 51 to 60.
- Peripheral Expressway exits redirected to Dadri and Dasna.
Background and Upcoming Protests
Farmers had earlier staged protests at Greater Noida Authority (November 27) and Yamuna Authority (November 28 to December 1). Other groups, including Kisan Mazdoor Morcha and Samyukt Kisan Morcha, are also planning marches from December 6 to advocate for a guaranteed Minimum Support Price (MSP).
Heavy disruptions are expected to continue as farmers intensify their protests.
