In a move reflecting its strict neutrality policy, Switzerland denied US military reconnaissance flights linked to the Middle East war but approved transport and maintenance missions.

March 15, 2026: Switzerland has restricted certain US military flights from crossing its airspace, citing its long-standing policy of neutrality as the war involving the United States, Israel, and Iran continues to intensify.
The Swiss Federal Council confirmed on Sunday that two requests by the US to allow reconnaissance aircraft to pass through Swiss airspace were rejected. However, three other flights — including two transport missions and one maintenance flight — were granted permission.
“The Swiss Federal Council has decided today on several requests for overflights by US military aircraft. Two requests linked to the ongoing war in the Middle East were rejected, while other flights for logistical purposes were approved,” the government said in a statement.
Neutrality at the Centre of the Decision
Switzerland said the move reflects its strict neutrality laws, which prohibit participation in armed conflicts or membership in military alliances. Officials emphasised that this principle applies equally to all parties involved in the current conflict, including the United States, Israel and Iran.
By allowing logistical flights while denying missions tied to combat operations, Switzerland is attempting to maintain a careful balance between cooperation and neutrality.
Escalating Conflict in West Asia
The decision comes as the war in West Asia enters its third week. Fighting between the US-Israel coalition and Iran, which began on February 28, 2026, has intensified sharply.
More than 2,000 people have reportedly been killed — most of them in Iran — while the conflict has triggered one of the largest disruptions to global oil supplies in modern history.
US President Donald Trump has urged allied countries to deploy naval forces to the strategic Strait of Hormuz after Iran warned of retaliation following the bombing of Kharg Island, a key oil export hub.
Trump claimed Iran had been “completely decimated” in the strike. Tehran, however, has vowed further reprisals and warned foreign companies to relocate major industrial operations away from the region.

Switzerland’s Delicate Balancing Act
By approving only logistical overflights while blocking reconnaissance missions linked to combat operations, Switzerland is seeking to uphold its reputation as a neutral state.
Officials reiterated that neutrality must guide all decisions regarding military movements through Swiss territory, regardless of which country is involved.
The approach reflects Switzerland’s long-standing role as a mediator in global disputes — but the latest decision also highlights the growing difficulty neutral states face as the conflict in the Middle East continues to escalate.
