Jagjit Singh Dallewal, a prominent farmer leader, concluded his indefinite hunger strike on Sunday after 131 days. He stressed that although he has concluded his fast, the farmers’ protest will continue. He initiated the fast on November 26 of the previous year to request a legal assurance on minimum support prices (MSP) for crops and additional concerns brought forth by protesting farmers.
The announcement was made at a farmers’ meeting during a Kisan Mahapanchayat held in Sirhind, Fatehgarh Sahib district. Dallewal spoke to the assembly and stated, “You have all requested me to conclude the hunger strike. I owe you for taking care of the agitation. I value your feelings. I accept your order.”
A number of farmers and morcha leaders urged me to conclude the endless hunger strike. Today, upon reaching an agreement with them, I have concluded my indefinite hunger strike. The demonstration has not been called off; it remains active,” he stated.
The announcement came after requests from Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu, who implored Dallewal on Saturday to conclude his fast.

“The ongoing dialogue between the representatives of the Indian Government and the representatives of farmers’ groups concerning their demands is continuing. Farmer leader Shri Jagjit Singh Dallewal has now come back from the hospital, and we wish him a quick recovery. We also ask them to conclude their fast, and we will convene with the representatives of farmers’ groups for discussions on 4th May at 11 am as per the previously determined date,” Chouhan wrote on X.
Bittu also urged Dallewal, stating, “Your well-being is crucial, and your life holds great value for the people of Punjab, as your guidance will always be essential in the fight for farmers and agricultural workers.”
Dallewal, representing a combined group of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM), initiated his fast to urge the central government to meet essential demands, such as the MSP law.
In January, after the Centre initiated talks with farmer leaders, Dallewal began receiving medical treatment at the Khanauri protest location. Nonetheless, he decided against breaking his fast at that moment.
