Union Cabinet approves expanding health coverage to all individuals aged 70 and above under ABPM-JAY
The Union Cabinet approved expanding health coverage to all individuals aged 70 and above, regardless of income, under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY).
Following the Cabinet meeting, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised that all individuals aged 70 and above would receive benefits from Ayushman Bharat PM Jan Arogya Yojana. Many families with elderly members have already been included in the coverage. In these households, extra coverage, known as top-up coverage, will amount to Rs 5 lakh.

Coverage intends to help 4.5 crore families of six crore senior citizens
The minister stated that the coverage intends to help 4.5 crore families of six crore senior citizens with a free health insurance cover of Rs five lakh.
He mentioned that a new unique card will be given to those who qualify for the program.
As per government guidelines, seniors aged 70 and older who currently receive benefits from public health insurance programs like CGHS, ECHS, and CAPF can stick with their current plan or switch to AB-PMJAY.
