Professor GN Saibaba, acquitted in Maoist link case, dies

GN Saibaba, a former Delhi University professor, passed away on Saturday after being in prison for ten years for suspected ties to Maoists before being cleared earlier this year.

GN Saibaba passes away after being in prison for10 years over Maoist ties

GN Saibaba, a former Delhi University professor, passed away on Saturday after being in prison for ten years for suspected ties to Maoists before being cleared earlier this year.

The 57-year-old passed away as a result of post-surgery complications following a procedure for gallbladder infection. For the past 20 days, he has been receiving treatment at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences in Hyderabad.

Bombay High Court had cleared Saiba in suspected Maoist connections case

In March, the Nagpur branch of the Bombay High Court cleared Saibaba and five co-defendants in the suspected Maoist connections case due to the prosecution’s inability to substantiate the accusations. His life sentence was also revoked by the court.

The High Court declared his punishment null and void, stating that the prosecution granted under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) was overturned.

The court found that the sanction given under the UAPA by the state authorities was not properly thought out. It characterized the independent authority’s submitted report, suggesting the use of UAPA provisions, as a “brief and mysterious half-page message.”

Saibaba has been imprisoned since 2017

Saibaba has been imprisoned since 2017 after being found guilty by a trial court in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra. Prior to that, he spent two years in jail from 2014 to 2016 before being released on bail.
