More than two years after ethnic violence left 258 dead and 60,000 displaced, thousands still remain in relief camps, living in uncertainty as the PM arrives with promises of healing and development.

September 12, 2025 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi will begin his Manipur visit on Saturday by meeting internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Churachandpur, officials said. The interaction, scheduled for 11:30 am, will be his first direct engagement with victims of the ethnic violence that broke out in May 2023. Later in the afternoon, he will hold another session with displaced families at Kangla, Imphal.

This will be Modi’s first visit to Manipur since the clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities left 258 dead and nearly 60,000 uprooted from their homes. More than two years later, thousands of survivors continue to live in relief camps across Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Bishnupur, and Imphal, struggling with overcrowding, poor sanitation, inadequate healthcare, and dwindling livelihood opportunities. Many children have lost years of schooling, while families remain uncertain about rehabilitation or safe return to their villages.

Alongside the IDP interactions, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone of new projects worth ₹7,344 crore at Peace Ground, Churachandpur, and inaugurate completed works worth ₹1,203 crore in Imphal. The initiatives range from urban road and drainage upgrades, healthcare in remote districts, and high school strengthening, to major highway expansion under Bharatmala Pariyojana. In Imphal, Modi will inaugurate the new Civil Secretariat, IT-SEZ buildings, Ima markets, and Manipur Bhawans in New Delhi and Kolkata.

“These initiatives underscore the Prime Minister’s continued commitment to the development and welfare of the State,” the Chief Secretary’s office said in a press release, urging people to extend a warm welcome. But for many displaced families still waiting to rebuild their lives, the visit carries the weight of expectation — not just for infrastructure, but for dignity, justice, and lasting peace.

Later in the afternoon, Modi will travel to Kangla, Imphal, for another round of interaction with IDPs. He will also inaugurate several completed projects and address the people at a public function.

The projects to be launched include ₹7,344 crore worth of new initiatives and ₹1,203 crore in completed works. Among the major foundation-laying projects are:

  • Manipur Urban Roads, Drainage and Asset Management Project (₹3,647 crore)
  • Manipur Infotech Development (MIND) Project (₹550 crore)
  • Strengthening of 120 high schools and higher secondary schools across 16 districts (₹134 crore)
  • Upgradation of key stretches of NH-102A and NH-202 under Bharatmala Pariyojana in Ukhrul district (₹1,897 crore across three packages)
  • Super Speciality healthcare projects in hill districts (₹105 crore)
  • Multipurpose Indoor Stadium at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex, Imphal (₹36 crore)

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
