The much-anticipated India–Pakistan clash on February 15 in Colombo now hangs in the balance after Islamabad formally communicated its refusal to play, citing political tensions.

New Delhi —February 2, 2026: A major controversy has erupted ahead of the T20 World Cup after Pakistan officially announced that it will not play against India in their scheduled high-profile clash on February 15 in Colombo, throwing the tournament’s planning into uncertainty even before the opening ball is bowled.

In a government-level decision, Islamabad formally communicated its refusal to face India, citing longstanding political tensions between the two countries. The move has reignited debate over the persistent intersection of politics and cricket in South Asia, once again putting one of the sport’s most anticipated rivalries in jeopardy.

The India–Pakistan fixture is traditionally the marquee event of any ICC tournament, attracting hundreds of millions of viewers worldwide and playing a crucial role in commercial revenue, broadcasting schedules, and tournament logistics. Pakistan’s withdrawal from the contest has therefore sent shockwaves through cricketing circles and forced tournament organizers into urgent deliberations.

A senior official in Pakistan’s sports ministry, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the decision was taken after “careful consideration of the prevailing diplomatic environment,” adding that national policy and security concerns had been prioritized over sporting engagements.

In response, Indian cricket officials expressed disappointment but maintained that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) would abide by ICC regulations. “We are prepared to play all scheduled matches. The matter now lies entirely with the ICC,” a senior BCCI source said.

Former cricketers and analysts have criticized the timing of the decision, warning that last-minute political interventions could severely disrupt tournament planning. “This is not just about one match — it affects scheduling, broadcasting commitments, ticket sales, and even group-stage calculations,” said former India captain Sunil Gavaskar. “Such uncertainty undermines the integrity of global tournaments.”

Pakistan cricket legend Wasim Akram also expressed concern, saying that while political realities cannot be ignored, fans ultimately suffer the most. “India–Pakistan matches are the soul of world cricket. Denying fans this contest hurts the game,” he said.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) acknowledged the situation in a brief statement, confirming that consultations are underway with both boards and host authorities. “The ICC is actively engaging with all stakeholders to ensure the smooth conduct of the tournament. An official decision will be announced in due course,” the statement read.

Fans across India, Pakistan, and the global cricketing community reacted with frustration and disappointment, flooding social media with criticism and appeals for the match to go ahead. Many called on the ICC to intervene decisively to preserve the spirit of the competition.

This is not the first time bilateral tensions have disrupted cricketing ties between the two nations. India and Pakistan have not played a bilateral series in over a decade, with encounters limited to multinational tournaments under ICC and Asian Cricket Council events.

With the tournament just weeks away, uncertainty continues to loom over one of its biggest fixtures. All eyes are now on the ICC and tournament organizers, whose decision will be crucial in determining whether the world’s most intense cricket rivalry will once again be sidelined by geopolitics.

Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
