A probationary IPS officer from Madhya Pradesh passed away in a road accident on Sunday while heading to taking charge in his first posting in Karnataka’s Hassan district.
Harsh Bardhan, a 26-year-old officer from the 2023 batch of the Karnataka cadre, had recently finished his training at the Karnataka Police Academy located in Mysuru.
The event took place at about 4:20 pm close to Kittane, roughly 10 km away from Hassan. As per the Hassan district police, the police vehicle Bardhan was in had a tyre blowout, leading to the driver, District Armed Reserve (DAR) constable Manjegowda, losing control.
The car subsequently collided with a tree and a house. Bardhan suffered serious head injuries and was quickly taken to Janapriya Hospital in Hassan. In spite of attempts to move him to a hospital in Bengaluru, he did not survive his injuries. The driver, Manjegowda, sustained slight injuries and is undergoing treatment in Hassan.

Bardhan, originally from Dosar village in the Singrauli district of Madhya Pradesh, was on his way to Hassan to assume his position as Assistant Superintendent of Police in Holenarasipur. His family originates from Bihar, where his father, Akhilesh, works as a sub-divisional magistrate. Bardhan, trained as a civil engineer, had finished six months of hands-on practical training in Hassan prior to the accident.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah conveyed profound sadness, extending his sympathies to Bardhan’s family. In a post on X, he stated, “This should not have occurred when years of effort were yielding results.”
