A second-year MBBS student from Anantnag, Kashmir, enrolled at Al-Ameen Medical College in Bijapur, Karnataka, reportedly endured severe ragging and physical abuse from senior students.

The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA), in a statement on the social media platform X regarding the incident, urged Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to intervene in the issue.

As per JKSA, the incident took place on Tuesday at 4 pm when the student, Hamim, attended a cricket match featuring the 2019 and 2022 batches.

It has been reported that a senior instructed Hamim to vacate the area. Although he complied, it wasn’t the first instance of him encountering harassment. The previous year, a senior had challenged him in the dining hall for failing to greet him at dinner.

Nasir Khuehami, National Convenor of the JKSA, stated that as the leader of the 2023 batch cricket team, Hamim encountered a conflict with older students.

“What started as verbal threats rapidly developed into blatant harassment. A group of upperclassmen embarrassed him, instructed him to give an ‘Al-Ameen salute’, sing tunes, and dance for their entertainment. They even tried to coerce him into their vehicle, suggesting additional danger. When he declined and began filming the event with his phone, the seniors grew more hostile,” Khuehami stated.

Later that evening, a group of six to eight people supposedly burst into Hamim’s hostel room. They attacked him, compelled him to film an apology video, and made threats. “You will remain here for an additional four years. We’re from here—think about how awful we could make your life,” they cautioned. They reportedly prevented him from playing cricket.

He stated that more robust anti-ragging measures should be put in place to guarantee the safety and dignity of every student, particularly non-locals and Kashmiri students, who frequently encounter extra discrimination.

The JKSA, on the other hand, urged Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to intervene for stringent measures against those responsible and to protect the rights and safety of students, particularly non-residents, in educational establishments.

Omar Abdullah, the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, expressed his opinion on the incident.

“I have spoken to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah about this unfortunate incident. He has assured me that the police have filed an FIR and necessary action will be taken. The four accused have been identified,” he said.
