Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has constituted a three-member inquiry committee to investigate the controversial discovery of cash at the residence of Justice Yashwant Varma. The panel includes Supreme Court Judge Aravind Kumar, Madras High Court Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava, and Senior Counsel B.V. Acharya from Karnataka—underscoring the gravity of the matter and the need for judicial transparency.
An in-house inquiry panel, appointed by then CJI Sanjiv Khanna, conducted a detailed investigation—interviewing 55 witnesses, reviewing video footage, and visiting the site. The report, submitted in May, concluded that Justice Varma had “tacit or active control” over the storeroom and recommended impeachment.

Recently, the Supreme Court dismissed Justice Varma’s appeal to invalidate the inquiry report, stating that procedural norms were adhered to and his conduct failed to inspire trust. The court further questioned him for participating in the inquiry committee proceedings and only raising objections afterward. This ruling clears the path for the impeachment process to proceed in Parliament under Articles 124, 217, and 218 of the Constitution.
With the monsoon session set to conclude on August 21, both Houses of Parliament continue to face repeated disruptions as the opposition members protest over the Bihar SIR exercise.

The same set of Bills is slated for introduction in the Rajya Sabha today, where the ruling NDA anticipates another smooth passage.
