Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, declared that new Aadhaar card applicants in the state need to provide their NRC application receipt number to combat illegal immigrants.
Aadhaar applications have exceeded population, says Assam Chief Minister
During a press conference, Sarma stated that the amount of Aadhaar applications has exceeded the state’s population, causing worries about possible fake applications. The Chief Minister expressed concern that in at least four districts, the number of Aadhaar card holders surpasses the expected population.
“Applications for Aadhaar cards are more than the population… It indicates that there are doubtful citizens and we have decided that new applicants will have to submit their NRC application receipt number,” he said.

The Chief Minister declared that the action is intended to stop the entry of individuals who have entered Assam without permission. Sarma mentioned that obtaining Aadhaar in Assam will be difficult as the state plans to strengthen the procedure for issuing new Aadhaar cards.
Sarma pointed out inconsistencies in several districts, specifically drawing attention to Dhubri as a cause for worry. More Aadhaar cards were issued in Dhubri district than the total population. He said that perhaps certain individuals obtained Aadhaar cards.
‘Not applying for NRC will result in not receiving an Aadhaar card’
Sarma stated that a formal notification will be issued in the next 10 days.
He emphasized that not applying for NRC will result in not receiving an Aadhaar card under the new system.
Nevertheless, he pointed out that the tea garden regions will be exempt from the regulation, while more stringent regulations will be introduced for adult applicants in other districts starting October 1.
The requirement to submit an NRC application receipt will not apply to the 9.55 lakh people whose biometrics were locked during the NRC process, Sarma clarified. These individuals will receive their Aadhaar cards without additional conditions.
