February 7, 2026 — Sweden’s royal family has come under renewed public attention following the release of additional documents linked to Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced financier and convicted sex offender. Among the names referenced in the newly unsealed files is Princess Sofia, the wife of Prince Carl Philip and daughter-in-law of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia.
The documents, released by the US Department of Justice as part of continuing disclosures in late 2025 and early 2026, reference Sofia’s brief and limited encounters with Epstein during her early career in New York, years before she married into the Swedish royal family.
Early Contact Before Royal Life
Before her 2015 marriage and transformation into a working royal, Princess Sofia — then known as Sofia Hellqvist — was pursuing work as a model and actress in New York. During this period, around 2005, she was introduced to Epstein through Swedish businesswoman and philanthropist Barbro Ehnbom, who operated a professional networking group and scholarship programme aimed at supporting young, ambitious women.
According to the Swedish Royal Court, Sofia met Epstein only a handful of times in social or professional settings. These encounters occurred several years before Epstein’s 2008 conviction in Florida for soliciting prostitution from a minor.
The court has consistently stated that Princess Sofia declined an invitation to visit Epstein’s private Caribbean island, Little St. James, and that there has been no contact between them for nearly two decades.
New Details in Unsealed Documents
While the royal household has long acknowledged Sofia’s limited contact with Epstein, the newly released files show that Ehnbom maintained communication with Epstein about Sofia even after their initial meetings.
In one email dated February 2010, Ehnbom reportedly sent Epstein a photograph of Sofia taken during a trip to Africa, along with a message referring to her as “soon Princess Sofia” and noting that Swedish media were searching for her at the time. It remains unclear whether Sofia was aware that the photograph was shared.
The documents also reference an invitation extended to Sofia in 2012 to attend a private, media-free Broadway screening in New York as Epstein’s guest. The Swedish Royal Court has firmly denied that she attended the event.

No Evidence of Ongoing Relationship
Observers and analysts note that Sofia’s mentions in the Epstein files differ significantly from those involving other prominent figures, where evidence suggests more extensive or post-conviction contact.
In Sofia’s case, the material appears to depict her as someone who was briefly within Epstein’s broader social orbit, rather than as an active participant or close associate. There is no indication in the documents of ongoing communication, personal involvement, or misconduct.
Legal experts and media outlets covering the releases have repeatedly stressed that appearing in Epstein-related documents does not imply wrongdoing, as the files often reflect one-sided communications, social introductions, or attempts at networking.

Royal Court Response
The Swedish Royal Court has reiterated its long-standing position that Princess Sofia’s interactions with Epstein were minimal, took place before his criminal exposure, and involved no inappropriate conduct.
“The contacts were brief, historical, and occurred long before Epstein’s crimes became publicly known,” court officials said, emphasizing that Sofia declined invitations and severed any association years ago.
Public Role and Current Work
Princess Sofia, now a mother of three, has focused her royal duties on advocacy for mental health awareness, children’s rights, and youth wellbeing. Since joining the royal family, she has maintained a low-profile, service-oriented public role.
While the latest disclosures have reignited discussion around historical associations, they have not resulted in new allegations against her.
Wider Reckoning Continues
The documents form part of a broader global reckoning over Epstein’s far-reaching network, revealing how he cultivated relationships across elite political, business, academic, and social circles long after his initial conviction.
As additional records are made public, renewed scrutiny continues to fall on those who crossed paths with him — underscoring the complex and often opaque nature of high-society networks during the early 2000s.
