Violent clashes erupt during Banni Utsav in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool; 70 injured, 2 critical
Officials reported that violent clashes broke out during the annual “Banni Utsav” event in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district on Sunday, resulting in at least 70 injuries while two individuals were in critical condition.
The yearly Banni Utsav, observed as part of Dussehra celebrations, turned into chaos once more, causing injuries to 70 individuals in Devaragattu village of Kurnool district. Local authorities have stated that two of the injured individuals are in critical condition.
The violence erupted despite increased security measures by police
The Banni Utsav in Holagunda mandal is famous for its customary stick fights, in which villagers from opposing groups compete for possession of the idols of Mala Malleswara Swamy. Officials reported that despite the heightened security measures and restrictions implemented by the police, the midnight festivities escalated into violence as attendees clashed in the early hours of Sunday.

The local police had expected possible disturbances and had brought in extra staff to control the crowds and avoid conflicts. The security efforts were not enough to prevent rival factions from engaging in bloody battles for control of the idols, due to the overwhelming intensity of the ritualistic fight.
Numerous individuals who were injured were quickly taken to hospitals nearby to receive medical care, as police keep a close watch on the situation.
The traditional Banni Utsav has raised concerns time and again due to its violent nature
Banni Utsav is an annual festival celebrated on the night of Dussehra celebration in Andhra Pradesh.
Banni is actually a simulated battle for seizing the idols in the Banni celebration. The purpose of this event was to take away the idols from God’s team, resulting in a intense battle called the Banni Fight. The celebration is in honor of Lord Mala Malleswara Swamy and Goddess Parvati’s triumph over the troublesome demon Mani and Mallasura in the Devaragattu area.
Although the Banni Utsav is considered an integral part of local customs, worries have arisen due to its violent tendencies. Some residents are still divided – with some passionately advocating for the cultural importance of the event, while others are pushing for tighter regulation to avoid more injuries.
The festival was banned by the Supreme Court in 2008, yet the tradition has persisted annually.
