NASA Satellite Spots “Ghost Island” Emerging from Sea

A NASA satellite captured the fleeting appearance of a "ghost island" in the Caspian Sea, formed by the eruption of the Kumani Bank mud volcano in early 2023. This transient landmass, roughly 400 meters across at its peak, eroded almost completely by late 2024, disappearing as mysteriously as it emerged.

The Caspian Sea briefly hosted a new island in 2023 after a dramatic mud volcano eruption off Azerbaijan’s coast. NASA’s Landsat satellites documented the rise and fall of this “ghost island,” offering a rare glimpse into the powerful and transient forces of nature.

In a rare geological phenomenon, a short-lived island emerged from the Caspian Sea following the eruption of the Kumani Bank mud volcano in early 2023. By the end of 2024, the island had almost completely eroded, retreating beneath the waves like an apparition. This fleeting landmass was captured in a series of satellite images by NASA’s Landsat 8 and 9, illustrating its dramatic appearance and disappearance over time.

Located about 25 kilometers (15 miles) off the eastern coast of Azerbaijan, the Kumani Bank mud volcano has a history of producing such transient islands. First recorded in 1861, its eruptions have consistently created islands of varying sizes and durations. The 2023 event formed an island approximately 400 meters (1,300 feet) across, which began eroding almost immediately after its emergence between late January and early February. By late 2024, only a diminished portion of the volcanic crest remained visible above the water.

Mud volcanoes like Kumani Bank are unique and understudied geological features. They form when subsurface pressures force a mixture of fluids, gases, and sediments to the surface. These features are most often found in regions with active tectonics or high sedimentation rates, such as Azerbaijan, which hosts over 300 mud volcanoes on land and offshore. This high concentration is attributed to the region’s location within a tectonic convergence zone where the Arabian and Eurasian plates collide.

Eruptions from mud volcanoes can be both fascinating and hazardous. They expel large amounts of muddy slurry, flammable gases like methane, and sometimes even towers of flame. Historical eruptions of Kumani Bank and nearby mud volcanoes have sent fire plumes hundreds of meters into the air. While it remains unclear if the 2023 eruption involved fire, its dramatic formation of a “ghost island” underscores the power and unpredictability of these features.

Interestingly, mud volcanoes may not be unique to Earth. Similar mounds on Mars suggest that these processes could occur on other planets, potentially offering clues about extraterrestrial geological activity. For now, the fleeting islands of the Caspian Sea serve as a powerful reminder of Earth’s dynamic processes and the mysteries still waiting to be explored.

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
