Four individuals lost their lives and many others are believed to be trapped beneath the debris following the collapse of a multi-story building in Delhi’s Mustafabad area during the early hours of Saturday.
Officials stated that teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Delhi Police are present at the location to conduct a rescue operation.
CCTV footage captured the collapse
CCTV footage recorded the moment the four-story L-shaped structure fell down. In a different video posted by news agency ANI, residents were observed helping rescue teams remove rubble after the house fell down.
Rajendra Atwal, Divisional Fire Officer, stated that a call about the house falling came in at approximately 2:50 am on Saturday, after which rescue teams hurried to the location.
“We received a call regarding a house collapse around 2:50 am…we reached the spot and found out that the entire building had collapsed and people were trapped under the debris…NDRF and Delhi Fire Service are working to rescue the people,” he said.
Sandeep Lamba, Additional DCP of the North East District, reported that so far, 14 individuals have been rescued. He verified that it was a four-level structure and that the rescue efforts are still in progress, with 8 to 10 individuals thought to be trapped beneath the rubble.
The house collapse took place just hours after a sudden change in Delhi’s weather on Friday night when intense rainfall and thunderstorms battered multiple areas of the city.
In another similar incident last week, a wall of a building under construction fell during a strong dust storm close to Madhu Vihar police station, resulting in one death and two injuries.
