A Mobile Phone torch was used by hospital staff to perform a Caesarean section on a pregnant woman and her unborn baby, which resulted in their deaths. The incident happened in the nation’s financial hub at a hospital that is managed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the richest civic body in India with a budget of more than ₹ 52,000 crore. A total of ₹ 6,250 crore, or 12% of the budget, is set aside for healthcare.

In order to facilitate Sahidun’s delivery, Khusruddin Ansari, a special needs man without a leg, managed to have his 26-year-old wife admitted to the Sushma Swaraj maternity home. The pair had only been hitched for a mere 11 months.

According to the family, the maternity home’s generator was left off for three hours on Monday when the power went out. They claimed that a second delivery took place in the shadows even after they lost the mother and baby. Following days of protests by family members outside the hospital, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has finally issued an inquiry.

A Mother’s Story of Loss and Betrayal in Maternity Care

“My daughter-in-law was absolutely healthy and had been pregnant for nine months,” stated the mother of Mr. Ansari. Her reports were all satisfactory. On April 29, they took her for the delivery at 7 a.m., kept her the entire day, and informed us that everything was good until 8 p.m. According to the doctors, the delivery would go as planned. Upon meeting her, I discovered that she had blood all over her body.”

“After making an incision, they came to get her signature and explained that she needed a C-section because she had had a fit. The power went out at that point, and they didn’t even transfer us to another hospital. With the use of a phone torch, they performed the delivery while taking us to the operating room. When we sobbed, the doctor told us that the mother would live. The child had died. By the time they recommended Sion Hospital to us, she had passed away. Additionally, there was no oxygen available,” she claimed.

Family’s Anguish Over Maternity Ward Tragedy

Mr. Ansari, who is very upset, has demanded that the doctors be disciplined. “The doctors and staff ought to suffer and be disciplined, just as I am. “We ought to close the hospital,” he declared.

“Justice is what I seek. I have a modest income and unique abilities. “My life has been ruined, I got married with a lot of difficulty,” he lamented.

The family also displayed pictures and videos of a different delivery that was made in the same operating room using a cellphone flashlight.

BMC Launches Inquiry Following Outcry Over Maternity Ward Tragedy

Former BJP council member Jagruti Patil stated that the BMC has finally acted by establishing an inquiry after meeting party candidate Mihir Kotecha, who is running for the Mumbai North East Lok Sabha seat, which includes the hospital.

“The condition of the hospital is bad. Such complaints have been made about this hospital earlier as well. Strict action will have to be taken,” she said.

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
