  • Modi in Assam, But No Stop in Manipur Congress slams PM Modi for not addressing Manipur’s ongoing crisis while inaugurating events in Assam. With over 250 dead and thousands displaced, the opposition demands an answer: Why won’t Modi visit Manipur?

BY PC Bureau

The Congress on Tuesday criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not visiting Manipur despite traveling to Assam, accusing him of once again neglecting the crisis-hit state as its people continue to “wait” for his attention.

Modi was on a three-day visit to Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Assam, where he attended various development initiatives. On Monday, he arrived in Assam, witnessing a grand Jhumoir dance performance by nearly 9,000 dancers and drummers. He also played the traditional drum ‘Dhomsa’ and inaugurated the Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment and Infrastructure Summit in Guwahati on Tuesday.

Congress general secretary in-charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh, criticized Modi’s itinerary, questioning why the Prime Minister could not extend his visit to Manipur, which has been under President’s Rule since February 13.

“The PM has yet again deeply disappointed the people of Manipur. He went to Guwahati and even spent a night there. But he did not visit nearby Manipur. It is all the more perplexing, given that the state is now under President’s Rule,” Ramesh posted on X.

He further questioned Modi’s silence on the ethnic violence that has gripped the state for nearly two years.

“When will Mr. Modi reach out directly to the people of Manipur who have gone through so much distress, pain, agony, and suffering over the past twenty-one months? All this after they had given the BJP and its allies such a decisive mandate almost exactly three years back. They wait and wait and wait…”

Manipur has been in turmoil since May 2023, when ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities erupted, leading to widespread violence, destruction, and displacement. More than 250 people have been killed, and thousands remain in relief camps.

On February 13, 2025, President’s Rule was imposed in the state, and the Manipur Legislative Assembly was put under suspended animation, following Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s resignation amid mounting pressure over his handling of the crisis.

Earlier this month, the Congress had called the imposition of President’s Rule a “direct admission of the failure” of both the BJP-led central and state governments. It also demanded an apology from Modi to the people of Manipur for his government’s inability to control the violence.

The opposition has repeatedly urged Modi to personally visit Manipur, interact with affected communities, and take decisive action to restore peace. Despite multiple appeals, Modi has yet to make a visit to the state since the violence began nearly two years ago.

With the 2024 general elections approaching, the Congress is likely to keep the pressure on the BJP over Manipur, framing it as an example of the government’s failure in conflict resolution and governance.
