Kuki MLAs’ Opposition to N. Biren Singh and Their Role in His Removal
The Kuki MLAs have been vocal critics of former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, accusing his administration of bias against the Kuki community and failing to prevent targeted violence against them during the ethnic unrest in Manipur. Following the outbreak of violence in May 2023, these MLAs publicly distanced themselves from the state government, demanding a separate administration for the Kuki-Zo tribes and blaming Singh’s policies for deepening the crisis.

Their opposition played a crucial role in pressuring the Centre to act against Biren Singh, as they repeatedly highlighted their community’s grievances and sought intervention from the Union government. The sustained political pressure, coupled with escalating ethnic violence and governance failures, eventually led to Singh’s resignation and the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur.
Background on Kuki MLAs and Their Political Stand
The Kuki MLAs in Manipur have historically supported the aspirations of the Kuki community, advocating for greater autonomy and political recognition. In May 2023, these MLAs had demanded a “separate administration” following ethnic clashes in the state, citing the need for a distinct political arrangement to ensure the safety and well-being of their people.
Their stance aligns with long-standing demands from Kuki groups for self-governance, with some factions pushing for a separate Kuki state or an autonomous territorial council within India. The demand has often been met with resistance from the state government, leading to political tensions.
With the current suspension of the Manipur Assembly, the MLAs’ latest appeal underscores the persistent divide between the hill and valley communities and the urgent need for a structured, inclusive resolution to the ongoing crisis.
