The attack adds to mounting security concerns as Meitei-led insurgent groups continue exploiting cross-border safe havens, deepening instability in a state already scarred by ethnic conflict that has claimed more than 260 lives since May 2023.

November 28, 2025: A fierce gunbattle broke out between Indian security forces and suspected insurgents along the Indo-Myanmar border in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district early Friday, leaving at least four Assam Rifles personnel injured, officials said.

According to initial reports, a patrol team of the Assam Rifles came under heavy fire around 4:30 a.m. near Border Pillars 85 and 86, in the vicinity of Saibol Kuki and Maringthel villages. The attackers—believed to be armed Manipur secessionist insurgents operating from bases inside Myanmar—launched a coordinated ambush using improvised explosives, grenades and automatic weapons.

The sudden assault triggered a 30-minute intense firefight in the forested terrain. The injured personnel were immediately evacuated to nearby military medical facilities. While their condition is being monitored, authorities confirmed that no fatalities have been reported so far.

Security sources said the attackers, taking advantage of the porous international border, managed to retreat into Myanmar territory before reinforcements could cordon off the area. A massive joint combing operation by the Assam Rifles and Manipur Police Commandos is currently underway to trace the group.

Friday’s attack highlights the growing security challenges facing India along the frontier, at a time when ethnic tensions between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo communities continue to destabilise Manipur. Several Meitei insurgent outfits—many banned under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act)—are known to operate from safe havens across the border, exploiting the ongoing political instability in Myanmar.

The ambush also comes amid renewed concerns over escalating cross-border militant movement. Reports said  vigilance along the border has been significantly stepped up, with calls for stronger intelligence exchange and operational coordination with the Myanmar authorities to prevent similar attacks.

This latest incident adds to the long list of violent clashes since the ethnic conflict erupted in May 2023, a period that has seen over 260 deaths, thousands displaced, and repeated assaults on security forces operating in the region.

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
