Delhi, May 2, 2025 – In a move aimed at bolstering public safety, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has greenlit a significant tripartite agreement to comprehensively audit and revamp the Delhi Fire Services (DFS). The landmark collaboration brings together the DFS, the Directorate General of Fire Services (under the Government of India), and the National Centre for Good Governance (NCGG).
The core objective of this initiative is to dramatically improve the DFS’s response times and overall efficiency in tackling fire emergencies and related critical services.
The proposal, put forth by the Delhi Government’s Home Department, envisions a thorough reorientation of the fire service to ensure enhanced safety and swifter service delivery for the capital’s residents. Preliminary discussions regarding this crucial undertaking commenced in late November 2024 with the Director General of the NCGG, followed by in-depth talks with the Director General of Fire Services in mid-December. Both national bodies have enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to collaborate with the DFS on this comprehensive evaluation. The audit will delve into the DFS’s current operational framework, financial management, institutional structure, and relevant legislation, paving the way for targeted improvements across these vital areas.

The NCGG’s role will be pivotal in embedding good governance practices within the fire department, emphasizing transparency, accountability, and a citizen-first approach. This will involve a strategic re-engineering of departmental processes to maximize efficiency. Simultaneously, the Directorate General of Fire Services (Government of India) will spearhead the adoption of national fire safety standards and best practices, ensuring alignment with national policies and guidelines. They will also contribute significantly through specialized training programs focusing on cutting-edge fire safety techniques and technologies, along with the sharing of valuable resources and expertise with the Delhi Fire Services.
This comprehensive audit and subsequent revamp are being hailed as a critical leap forward in ensuring a safer environment for all citizens of Delhi.
