Kolkata, June 27, 2025:

A 24-year-old female law student was allegedly gang-raped inside the premises of a private law college in Kolkata’s Kasba area earlier this week. The incident reportedly occurred on the evening of June 25, sparking widespread outrage across political and student circles. Three individuals, including a former student and two current students of the college, have been arrested in connection with the case.

Incident Details:

According to the FIR, the survivor was allegedly lured into a secluded guardroom located within the college campus between 7:30 pm and 8:50 pm on Tuesday. Once inside, she was allegedly assaulted and raped by the trio, who locked the room from the inside to prevent any intervention.

The survivor later informed her family, who approached the police. A formal complaint was registered at the Kasba police station, following which the investigation began swiftly.

The Accused:

The police have arrested the following individuals:

  • Monojit Mishra, 31, a former student of the law college and a former president of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) unit on campus.

  • Zaib Ahmed, 19, a first-year student.

  • Pramit Mukherjee, 20, also a current student of the same institution.

While Monojit and Zaib were picked up from the Talbagan area on Wednesday evening, Pramit was arrested from his home later that night. All three were produced in court on Thursday and have been remanded to five days of police custody. They will be presented in court again on July 2.

Investigation Underway:

Police have sealed the guardroom where the alleged assault took place and sent it for forensic examination. The victim underwent medical tests at the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, and her statement has been recorded under Section 164 of the CrPC.

Mobile phones belonging to the accused have been seized and will be examined to verify digital evidence, including messages, location data, and call records.

Political and Public Reactions:

The case has triggered a political storm in West Bengal. BJP IT Cell Head Amit Malviya took to social media to criticize the ruling Trinamool Congress, citing a “collapse in law and order” and comparing it to the high-profile R.G. Kar Medical College rape and murder case from last year.

Horrific! A female law student was gang-raped inside a law college in Kasba, a suburb of Kolkata, on 25th June, by none other than a former student and two college staff members. Shockingly, reports suggest that a TMC member is also involved.

Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari slammed the government for failing to ensure the safety of women in educational institutions, while BJP leader Pradeep Bhandari accused the state machinery of protecting perpetrators with political links.

In response, the TMCP (Trinamool student wing) clarified that Monojit Mishra no longer holds any position in the organisation and assured that strict action must be taken, regardless of the accused’s past affiliations.

Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim, when asked about the incident, said he had not yet received detailed information but promised to speak to law enforcement officials.

Echoes of a Tragedy:

The latest case comes less than a year after the shocking rape and murder of a postgraduate medical student at R.G. Kar Medical College in August 2024. That case led to state-wide protests and a CBI investigation. The main accused in that case was later convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment.
