New Delhi, Sept 28 — All Ladakh Student Associations across India have jointly submitted a memorandum to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), demanding justice, accountability, and immediate support for the victims of the September 24 tragedy in Ladakh, which left four people dead and several others injured.
Representatives from the Ladakh Student’s Welfare Society Delhi (LSWSD), All Ladakh Student Association Chandigarh (ALSAC), All Ladakh Student Association Jammu (ALSAJ), and South India Ladakh Student Association (SILSA) signed the appeal. The student bodies said the incident had “caused immense sorrow and anxiety among the people of Ladakh, particularly the students and youth studying in different parts of the country.”
Students’ Five Demands
The memorandum laid out five clear appeals:
- Independent Investigation: “We request a clear, transparent, and impartial investigation into the tragic incident of 24th September so that the truth is brought to light and accountability is ensured.”
- Support for Victims: “We request free medical treatment for all those injured and appropriate compensation for the families of the four individuals who lost their lives in this tragic event.”
- Release of Peaceful Protesters: “We humbly appeal for the release of the peaceful protesters who were detained during this period, and we request that they not be treated as criminals, as they were exercising their democratic right to express their concerns.”
- Immediate Release of Sonam Wangchuk: “We respectfully urge the immediate release of Shri Sonam Wangchuk, whose lifelong dedication to Ladakh has been peaceful and constructive, and who continues to inspire the youth with the values of non-violence and service to society.”
- Right to Protest: “We respectfully request permission for all Ladakh Student Associations across India to hold peaceful protests and publicly express our concerns in a lawful and democratic manner, without fear of suppression.”

A Call for Democratic Values
The memorandum strongly underlined the students’ faith in India’s democratic framework. “While we firmly believe in the values of peace, democracy, and justice that our nation upholds, we also feel it is our moral duty as students to respectfully place the following appeals before your esteemed office,” the document stated.
Another section read: “We submit this memorandum with utmost faith in the principles of democracy and the justice system of our nation. We remain hopeful that your esteemed office will consider these appeals with compassion and urgency, and take appropriate measures to restore peace, justice, and harmony in Ladakh.”

Background
On September 24, violence in Ladakh left four civilians dead and many injured. The incident has heightened concerns among Ladakhi students studying across the country, who said they are now anxious about the safety and rights of their families back home.
The detention of several peaceful protesters, along with the arrest of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, has further inflamed tensions. In their memorandum, students called Wangchuk “a source of inspiration who has always championed non-violence and service to Ladakh’s people.”
The associations closed their joint appeal with a message of hope: “We stand united for justice, peace, and harmony in Ladakh.”
