Kuki Inpi Delhi: No Kuki-Zo MLA to Back “New” Manipur Govt

Kuki Inpi Delhi has reiterated the July 5 resolution passed by Kuki Inpi Manipur, stating that no Kuki-Zo MLA will take part in forming any new government in Manipur. The group cited persistent injustices, ethnic violence, and the breakdown of constitutional order in the state.

Kuki Inpi Delhi has declared full backing for the political boycott announced by Kuki Inpi Manipur earlier this month, asserting that no Kuki-Zo MLA will participate in any new Manipur government unless justice is served and tribal rights are protected.

New Delhi, July 21, 2025 — In a move that underscores the deepening alienation of the Kuki-Zo community from the political establishment in Manipur,  Kuki Inpi Delhi (KID) has extended full support to a July 5 resolution passed by its apex body, declaring that no Kuki-Zo MLA will participate in the formation of any new government in the state.

The declaration, issued Sunday, asserts the Kuki-Zo people’s unwavering commitment to their identity, land, and political rights, and affirms that under no circumstances will they compromise on these fundamentals in light of the ongoing ethnic and political crisis in Manipur.

“No Kuki-Zo MLA shall take part in the formation of any new popular government in the state of Manipur,” the KID press release states, echoing the earlier resolution by Kuki Inpi Manipur. “Under no circumstances shall the Kuki-Zo people compromise our ancestral land, culture, identity, and political, social and economic rights.”

The resolution comes amid continuing tension and mistrust between the tribal Kuki-Zo people and the majority Meitei community following the ethnic violence that erupted in May 2023. The violence, which began over land and administrative disputes, quickly escalated into one of Manipur’s worst communal crises in decades, leading to hundreds of deaths and the displacement of over 60,000 people, mostly from hill districts inhabited by tribal communities.

The refusal of the Kuki-Zo community to participate in any new government formation is not merely symbolic. It represents a total political freeze in their engagement with the state administration, which they accuse of failing to protect them during the conflict and subsequently denying justice and rehabilitation.

“The struggle for justice, dignity and rightful recognition requires uncompromising solidarity and political maturity,” the KID stated, calling on the community to show restraint and responsibility in these critical times.

The press release reflects the collective frustration of the Kuki-Zo people over what they see as state complicity or inaction during the attacks on their villages and neighborhoods in 2023-24. Despite numerous petitions to the Centre and Supreme Court, and appeals for a separate administrative arrangement, justice and security remain elusive for many tribal families who have still not returned to their homes.

The decision to withhold participation in government formation sends a clear message: normal politics cannot resume without justice. Kuki-Zo leaders have repeatedly stated that any coalition built without addressing their core demands—security, rehabilitation, and political safeguards—will lack legitimacy in the eyes of their community.

By backing KIM’s position, Kuki Inpi Delhi, which represents a large Kuki-Zo diaspora in the national capital and surrounding regions, is reinforcing the view that the current crisis is not just regional but constitutional, and that the community’s trust in the Indian democratic process is at a critical juncture.

“This is more than a political decision; it is a reaffirmation of our collective identity and future,” the KID statement concluded.
