March 26, 2026: Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it had successfully targeted a U.S. F-18 fighter jet, marking a potential escalation in the ongoing confrontation between Tehran and Washington.
In a brief statement, the IRGC claimed it had “successfully targeted” the aircraft but did not provide details on the location, extent of the damage, or the condition of the pilot. There has been no immediate confirmation from the U.S. military, which has previously rejected similar Iranian claims during the current conflict.
Video Purports to Show Midair Strike
Footage circulated by Iran’s state-linked broadcaster Press TV appears to show a fighter jet in flight before a sudden flash near the aircraft, suggesting a possible midair strike. The jet then seems to lose stability, leaving a visible trail that could indicate damage or loss of control.
In subsequent frames, an object separates from the aircraft, appearing to show a pilot ejecting with a parachute while the jet continues on an unstable trajectory. The video is brief and has not been independently verified.
The Consulate General of Iran in Mumbai also shared the footage on social media, stating that the aircraft had been hit by Iran’s integrated air defence system.

Pattern of Disputed Claims
The latest assertion follows a series of similar claims by the IRGC since hostilities intensified in February. On March 5, Iran said it had downed a U.S. F-15 Strike Eagle near its southeastern border — a claim dismissed by United States Central Command as “baseless.”
Again on March 19, Iran reported striking a U.S. F-35 stealth fighter over central Iran, alleging heavy damage. U.S. officials later indicated the aircraft had made an emergency landing, contradicting claims of a shootdown.
Fresh Warning Over Alleged Island Threat
Shortly after the latest development, Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf warned that hostile forces, allegedly backed by a regional country, may be planning to seize an Iranian island.
He said Iran was closely monitoring all movements and threatened “relentless attacks” on the infrastructure of any country involved.
With no independent verification of the latest incident and conflicting narratives from both sides, the situation remains fluid. The claim, if confirmed, would mark a significant escalation, but past instances underline the difficulty of verifying battlefield developments in real time.
