Iranian authorities said their armed forces will stay on full alert throughout the two-week truce, and are fully prepared to resume combat operations if talks collapse or if any violations occur during the ceasefire period.

April 8, 2026 — Iran has declared that it has achieved “nearly all” of its war objectives and positioned itself as holding the upper hand, even as it agreed to enter negotiations with the United States under a temporary ceasefire framework.

In a detailed statement, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said the conflict—now in its 40th day—had forced its adversaries into what it described as “historic helplessness,” claiming that the United States had been seeking a ceasefire for weeks. Tehran said it had rejected repeated deadlines set by U.S. President Donald Trump, insisting it would continue fighting until its strategic goals were secured.

War Objectives ‘Achieved’

The council credited Iran’s battlefield performance and domestic unity for what it called a decisive shift in the conflict. It said the war would continue “as long as necessary” to consolidate gains and reshape regional power dynamics in favor of Iran and its allies.

According to the statement, the decision to enter talks was taken only after what it described as the “official acceptance” of Iran’s core demands and the inability of its adversaries to enforce their military threats.

The move was approved under the direction of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, with negotiations set to take place in Islamabad for an initial period of two weeks starting April 10.

10-Point Plan at the Core of Talks

Tehran said it had presented a 10-point proposal to Washington through Pakistani mediation, laying out sweeping conditions for any final settlement. These include:

  • Controlled maritime passage through the Strait of Hormuz under Iranian coordination
  • Full withdrawal of U.S. military forces from the region
  • An end to hostilities against Iran and its regional allies
  • Payment of war damages to Iran
  • Lifting of all U.S. sanctions and international restrictions
  • Release of frozen Iranian assets abroad
  • Formal adoption of the agreement through a binding UN Security Council resolution

Iran said such a resolution would transform the agreement into enforceable international law and mark a “major diplomatic victory.”

Ceasefire, But Not Peace

Despite agreeing to negotiations, Iranian authorities stressed that the ceasefire does not signal the end of the war. The statement repeatedly emphasized that military readiness remains unchanged, warning that “our hands are on the trigger” and any misstep by the United States or Israel would prompt an immediate and forceful response.

Officials framed the talks as an extension of the battlefield rather than a departure from it, urging national unity and cautioning against internal divisions during the negotiation phase.

Pakistan’s Mediation Role

The statement also highlighted Pakistan’s role in facilitating the talks, noting that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had conveyed Washington’s willingness to negotiate based on Iran’s framework. Tehran portrayed this as a sign that the U.S. had “submitted” to its conditions despite earlier threats.

Uncertain Path Ahead

While Iran expressed confidence that the negotiations could formalize what it sees as a battlefield victory, it made clear that failure to secure its demands would lead to a resumption of hostilities.

“The current negotiations are a continuation of the battlefield,” the statement said, adding that if talks do not yield a decisive political outcome, Iran is prepared to continue fighting “until all the demands of the nation are met.”

The coming two weeks of negotiations are now seen as critical—not just for ending the current conflict, but for determining the future balance of power in the Middle East.
