The letter frames Tehran’s recent strikes as defensive, while blaming the US exit from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action for escalating tensions.

April 1, 2026 — In a notable diplomatic outreach at a time of heightened regional tensions, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has issued an open letter addressed directly to the people of the United States, seeking to separate public sentiment from government policy while defending Tehran’s recent military actions.

The letter, released on Wednesday, comes amid an ongoing multi-week conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, which has seen retaliatory strikes, mounting casualties, and significant infrastructure damage across the region. Its timing—just hours ahead of a scheduled address by US President Donald Trump—has drawn particular attention, with analysts watching for signs of de-escalation or further confrontation.

A Dual Message: Conciliation and Critique

According to summaries carried by Iranian state media and international outlets, Pezeshkian’s message strikes a careful balance—extending goodwill toward the American public while sharply criticising US foreign policy.

He explicitly states that Iran holds “no enmity” toward ordinary Americans, Europeans, or regional populations, urging readers to distinguish between citizens and state actions. The letter calls on Americans to look beyond what it describes as “manufactured narratives” about Iran.

At the same time, Pezeshkian revisits longstanding grievances, referencing historical flashpoints such as the 1953 coup, and condemns recent US and Israeli strikes on Iranian infrastructure as unprovoked aggression that has endangered civilians and destabilised the region.

Framing the Conflict

Tehran presents its own military actions as restrained and justified. The letter describes Iran’s responses as “measured” and rooted in legitimate self-defense following attacks on its territory and interests.

Pezeshkian also points to the collapse of the 2015 nuclear agreement—Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action—blaming Washington’s withdrawal for escalating tensions and inflicting economic hardship on Iranian citizens. He contrasts this with Iran’s claim that it had remained compliant at the time.

In a more pointed section, the Iranian president questions US strategic priorities, asking whether Washington is truly acting in its own national interest or as a proxy for Israel. He references domestic American dissent, including protest movements, as evidence of growing unease over foreign policy decisions.

Warning and Opening

The letter warns that continued escalation would be “costly and futile,” emphasising that confrontation benefits no side. Invoking Iran’s long history, Pezeshkian writes that the country has “outlasted many aggressors,” underscoring resilience while cautioning against further conflict.

Despite the sharp rhetoric, he leaves the door open to diplomacy—stating that meaningful engagement remains possible if the United States offers guarantees against future threats and respects Iran’s sovereignty and dignity.

Context: A Region on Edge

Pezeshkian’s outreach reflects the broader complexity of Iran’s internal and external dynamics. Since taking office, the relatively moderate leader has signalled openness to negotiations, even as he navigates pressure from hardline factions aligned with Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

The current escalation follows a cycle of strikes and counterstrikes involving Iranian, US, and Israeli forces, alongside regional proxy activity. Earlier this year, Iran launched missile and drone attacks in response to strikes on its nuclear and military sites, while also attempting to reassure neighbouring Gulf states over spillover risks.

Strategic Signalling

Analysts interpret the open letter as a calculated act of public diplomacy aimed at multiple audiences:

  • Influencing American public opinion by drawing a distinction between citizens and policymakers
  • Shaping international narratives ahead of possible ceasefire discussions
  • Signalling domestically that Iran remains open to peace without conceding core interests

Reactions and Implications

The letter has triggered immediate debate online, with supporters viewing it as a genuine attempt at de-escalation and critics dismissing it as strategic messaging that downplays Iran’s regional activities.

Economically, the timing coincides with volatility in global oil markets, particularly concerns surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for energy supplies. Any sign of easing tensions could stabilise markets, while further escalation risks disruption.

An Uncertain Next Step

US officials have yet to respond formally, but the proximity of the letter’s release to Trump’s upcoming address suggests it may factor into Washington’s next moves.

Whether the message leads to renewed diplomatic engagement or is overshadowed by continued hostilities remains unclear. For now, it stands as the latest attempt to reshape a deeply strained relationship—one defined by decades of mistrust, intermittent conflict, and rare moments of direct appeal beyond governments to the people themselves.
