February 28, 2026: Iran has launched multiple waves of ballistic missiles toward Israel in direct retaliation for the joint US-Israeli strikes on Iranian territory, marking a dangerous escalation and opening a new phase of open state-to-state warfare.
The Israeli military confirmed that dozens of Iranian missiles were fired toward major population centers, triggering air raid sirens across the country, including in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa, and central Israel. The launches represent Iran’s first large-scale military response since Israeli and American forces struck targets in Tehran, Isfahan, and other strategic locations earlier on Saturday.
Israel’s air defense systems, including the Iron Dome and long-range interception platforms, were activated immediately, intercepting many of the incoming missiles mid-air. Loud explosions were heard across northern and central Israel as interception systems engaged the threats.

Initial reports indicate that some missiles landed in open areas, with no confirmed large-scale casualties so far. Authorities warned, however, that further missile waves could follow.
Iranian officials had earlier vowed a “crushing response” to the strikes on Iranian soil, particularly attacks near key government and military sites in Tehran. State media confirmed that Iran’s armed forces had been placed on full alert and were prepared for sustained retaliation.
The missiles used in the attack are believed to be medium-range ballistic missiles capable of reaching Israel from Iranian territory, underscoring Tehran’s ability to strike directly without relying solely on proxy forces.
Israel has declared a nationwide state of emergency, shut its airspace, and ordered civilians to remain in shelters as defense forces prepare for additional missile launches or drone attacks.
The retaliation signals a major escalation in the conflict, transforming what began as pre-emptive strikes into an active exchange of direct military attacks between Iran and Israel. Security analysts warn the confrontation could expand further if additional US assets or regional bases are targeted in the coming hours or days.
The situation remains fluid, with both sides appearing prepared for prolonged military engagement.
