Hindu population dip by 7.8%, Muslims increase by 14% in India: PM-EAC report

According to a report published by the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM), the proportion of India’s majority Hindu population fell by 7.81 percent between 1950 and 2015, while the Muslim community had a 43.15 percent increase over the same time frame.

According to the report “Share of religious minorities: A cross-country analysis,” over this time, the Hindu population’s share in India decreased by 7.8 percent to 78.06 percent.

In comparison, during the same period, the percentage of Muslims and Christians rose by 43.15 percent to 14.09 percent and 5.4% to 2.36%, respectively.

Comparably, within the same time period, the percentages of Sikh and Buddhist populations increased to 1.85% and 0.81%, respectively. Nonetheless, in 2015, the proportion of Jains and Parsis in the demographic mix decreased to 0.36% and 0.004%, respectively.

The council’s study made it clear that its goal was to determine whether minorities were becoming more or less represented in society by looking at the numbers rather than attempting to understand why these changes were occurring.

“India’s performance suggests that there is a conducive environment to foster diversity in the society. It is not possible to promote better life outcomes for the disadvantaged sections without providing a nurturing environment and societal support through a bottom-up approach. It is not surprising, therefore, that minority populations from across the neighbourhood come to India during times of duress,” the study noted.

Share of majority population increased in neighbouring nations

It was discovered that the population of their majority community had increased in a number of neighboring countries. With the exception of the Maldives, every country with a majority of Muslims has seen a growth in the proportion of the majority religious group.

Only Sri Lanka and Bhutan, two of the five non-Muslim majority nations, saw an increase in the percentage of their population who identify as majority.

According to the study’s authors, despite claims to the contrary from some quarters, the data demonstrates that minorities are not only protected but are thriving in India. This is especially noteworthy in light of the larger South Asian neighborhood, where minority populations have alarmingly declined while the share of the majority religious denomination has increased in nations like Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and Afghanistan.

The majority religious denomination’s share has decreased by about 22% on a global scale. Over the research period, there has been an increase in global diversity. There have been more countries on every major continent where the share of the majority religious denomination has decreased than increased.

The report went on to say that in nations that have seen significant changes, the religion of the majority population has a significant influence.

POWER CORRIDORS

Former Vice President Venkaiah Naidu commended Power Corridors as a commendable news magazine, affirming that it not only upholds Media Dharma but also fulfills its societal obligations. Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
