The flood crisis in the Northeast stays severe as relentless downpours keep wreaking havoc in multiple states. The overall number of fatalities from the floods and landslides caused by the recent heavy rainfall has now reached 36, with more than 550,000 individuals impacted throughout the area.
Assam is the most severely impacted state, with 11 fatalities and more than 5.35 lakh people affected in 22 districts. Fifteen rivers, such as the Brahmaputra, Barak, and Subansiri, were running above hazardous levels at several sites.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reported that Sribhumi, Cachar, and Nagaon districts were among the most severely impacted. More than 31,000 individuals have sought refuge in 165 aid camps, while the flooding has devastated crops over 12,610 hectares and caused the death of 94 animals in the past 24 hours.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, during his visit to flood-affected regions in Lakhimpur district, attributed the worsening flood situation to the water released from the Ranganadi Dam of North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO) in upstream Arunachal Pradesh.

The flooding in Assam affected rail, road, and ferry services, leading to the suspension of ferry operations between Jorhat and Majuli for the second day in a row. Train services originating from Silchar were also suspended because of waterlogging.
In Arunachal Pradesh, the toll rose to 10 following an additional death reported from Lohit district. More than 900 individuals in 23 districts have been impacted by floods and landslides, with rivers swelling across West Kameng, Dibang Valley, Papum Pare, and additional districts. Governor Lt General K T Parnaik (Retd) conveyed his condolences and advised the public to stay vigilant in at-risk areas.
Sikkim announced three fatalities and six soldiers unaccounted for following a landslide that hit a military camp in Chhaten, Mangan district on Sunday night. Defence officials recognized the deceased as Havaldar Lakhwinder Singh, Lance Naik Munish Thakur, and porter Abhishek Lakhada. Rescue efforts are in progress in very difficult terrain.
