October 7, 2025: In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves across Haryana’s administrative and police circles, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Y. Puran Kumar, a 2001-batch IPS officer of the Haryana cadre, died by suicide on Tuesday afternoon at his official residence in Sector 11, Chandigarh.
According to officials, the 49-year-old officer allegedly shot himself with his service revolver around 1:30 PM. His body was found in the basement of his soundproof government residence (House No. 116). He was pronounced dead on the spot by a medical team.
Police confirmed that no suicide note was recovered, and the motive behind the act remains unclear. His death came just days after assuming a new post, intensifying questions about the pressures faced by senior police officials.

Family and Personal Tragedy
Kumar is survived by his wife, Amneet P. Kumar, a 1999-batch IAS officer currently serving as Commissioner and Secretary, Women and Child Development Department, Haryana. She was in Japan as part of an official delegation with Chief Minister Saini at the time of the incident.
Officials said she was informed while en route and is expected to return to India by Wednesday evening. No public statement has been released from her office yet.
The officer’s death has triggered a wave of grief and introspection within the police community. Senior Haryana and Chandigarh officers, including the DGP and top bureaucrats, visited his residence to pay respects.

Tributes poured in on social media from former colleagues, IAS and IPS officers, and public figures, who described him as “a man of duty and quiet dignity.”
The tragedy has also reignited debate over mental health and systemic stress in India’s police forces — an issue that continues to claim lives in uniformed services every year.
Investigators are now waiting for autopsy and ballistic reports from CFSL and GMCH to confirm sequence of events. A team is also analyzing his mobile phone and digital communications for possible clues.
Officials confirmed that the joint probe will remain open until all possible causes — professional or personal — are conclusively examined.
