A horrifying serial killing case has sent shockwaves through Haryana’s Panipat district, where police have arrested a 32-year-old woman accused of drowning four children over a two-year period — including her own three-year-old son. Investigators say the murders were driven by the woman’s obsessive jealousy over the children’s beauty.
Panipat Superintendent of Police Bhupender Singh confirmed that the accused, Poonam, allegedly targeted children within her immediate and extended family from 2023 to 2025. “The accused appears to be a psychopath. She believed no child in her family should be more beautiful than her,” Singh said at a press briefing.
The first killing dates back to 2023, when Poonam allegedly drowned her sister-in-law’s nine-year-old daughter in Bhawar village, Sonipat. To deflect suspicion, she soon after drowned her own toddler son, making the deaths seem like tragic accidents. In August 2025, she allegedly killed her cousin’s six-year-old daughter in Sewah village in a similar manner.
The investigation intensified on December 1, 2025, after the death of six-year-old Vidhi — Poonam’s niece — during a wedding function in Naulakha village. Vidhi was found dead in a water tub that had been locked from the outside. CCTV footage placed Poonam near the scene, prompting closer scrutiny.

During interrogation, Poonam confessed to all four murders. Police officials described her as well-educated — holding an MA in Political Science — but exhibiting traits of extreme psychopathy. Investigators said she planned the killings methodically and showed chilling composure afterward, even celebrating privately.
Witnesses at the December wedding recalled Poonam behaving unusually, staying withdrawn and refusing to participate in the festivities. Police believe this façade concealed her violent intentions.

In each case, Poonam allegedly exploited the children’s trust to isolate them. On the night of Vidhi’s killing, she reportedly coaxed the girl toward a water-filled tub on the pretext of resting, then forced her underwater when she resisted. Poonam later gave misleading explanations for her wet clothes when questioned by relatives.
All four victims — her son and three young girls from the extended family — died in strikingly similar circumstances. Poonam is now in judicial custody as police continue to investigate whether more crimes or attempted murders may be linked to her.
