In a startling revelation, Haris Farooqi, a former top-performing student at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), has been exposed as the mastermind behind ISIS operations in India. Farooqi, who founded the Students of AMU group and earned the affectionate title of “Ameer” (Chief) among peers, was arrested by the Assam Special Task Force (STF) on suspicion of plotting to plant improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

ISIS India Chief Haris Farooqi Caught in Assam
The arrest came following a coordinated operation near the international border after Farooqi and his accomplice, Anurag Singh alias Rehan, crossed over from Bangladesh. Acting on intelligence from various agencies, the STF deployed a team to intercept the suspects in the Dhubri sector.
On Tuesday evening, the STF launched a manhunt in the border area and successfully apprehended Farooqi and Singh in the early hours of Wednesday at Dharmasala, Dhubri. Both suspects were promptly brought to the STF office in Guwahati for further questioning.

Identified as a resident of Dehradun, Uttarakhand, Farooqi’s arrest sheds light on the reach and influence of ISIS within India. Anurag Singh, hailing from Panipat, Haryana, is reported to have converted to Islam, while his wife is a Bangladeshi national.
Haris Farooqi Funded Terror Plans in India
Described as highly indoctrinated and motivated ISIS leaders, Farooqi and Singh were allegedly involved in recruitment, terror funding, and planning terror acts using IEDs across India. The Assam Police Chief Public Relations Officer, Pranabjyoti Goswami, emphasized that both individuals had advanced the cause of ISIS through various conspiracies.

The arrest follows a series of cases registered against Farooqi and Singh by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS). The STF Assam has announced its intention to hand over the accused to NIA for further legal proceedings.
The revelation of Farooqi’s involvement in ISIS activities has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the imperative need for continued vigilance against radicalization and extremism.
