Governor Phil Murphy has sounded the alarm over the escalating mystery drone sightings that have spread from New Jersey to New York, labeling the situation “deadly serious.” Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Murphy revealed that state and federal agencies are actively investigating the phenomenon, which includes reports of drones near sensitive locations like the Picatinny Arsenal and President-elect Donald Trump’s Bedminster golf course.
“These are apparently very sophisticated,” Murphy stated. “The minute you get eyes on them, they go dark.” He added that 49 sightings were reported on Sunday alone, prompting authorities to treat the situation with utmost urgency.
Brooklyn residents joined the growing chorus of concern on Sunday night, with reports of drones swarming near the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. Local resident Diane Atkins captured video footage of what she described as “10, maybe 12” loud, unidentified objects. “Definitely not planes,” she noted.
Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis shared the footage on X, demanding answers from authorities. “Are these drones, and why are they flying over sensitive facilities and infrastructure?” she wrote, drawing comparisons to the 2023 Chinese spy balloon incident.
While the FBI, FAA, and Department of Homeland Security have yet to confirm the origins of the drones, Murphy reassured the public that the investigation is being taken seriously. “We’re throwing everything we’ve got at this,” he said, acknowledging public concerns over the drones’ nefarious potential.
For now, officials stress that no immediate threats have been identified. However, with sightings mounting daily and answers remaining elusive, the mysterious drones have left the region—and the nation—on edge.
