Guwahati: Jorhat MP and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi on Monday sharply criticised Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the BJP’s IT Cell, accusing them of exploiting the death of legendary singer Zubeen Garg for political gain and showing “a complete lack of morality and sensitivity.”
Gogoi said the Chief Minister and his party’s online machinery have lost all sense of decency in handling the singer’s tragic passing. “Instead of showing compassion to a grieving state, the Chief Minister appears to be using police authority to assert control. Assam is still mourning, but he seems to have forgotten that. Fear of losing power has overridden even basic humanity,” he said.

He urged the government to release all relevant information surrounding Garg’s death, including why the North East Festival in Singapore continued after his passing. “The people of Assam deserve clarity. Baseless statements must stop, or he risks losing his favourite chair before 2026,” Gogoi added.
The remarks came amid widespread outrage on social media over the mysterious circumstances of Garg’s death, which has deeply affected fans across Assam and the Northeast. Gogoi accused the government of arrogance and insensitivity, saying the ruling party is deepening divisions rather than uniting the state in grief.
Political analysts see this as a sign that the Congress is adopting a sharper, more confrontational stance ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. The state government, meanwhile, insists that the investigation is being conducted transparently and professionally.
The legendary singer Zubeen Garg, 52, died on September 19 in Singapore while scuba diving, leaving a cultural void in Assam and, increasingly, a politically charged discourse.
