On January 30, 2025, the Gandhi Mandela Foundation, in association with Hindu College, Delhi University, solemnly commemorated the 77th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi at The United Service Institution of India (USI) in Delhi. The event served as a powerful reminder of Gandhi’s enduring principles of non-violence, truth, and peace, emphasizing their continued relevance in today’s world. Dignitaries, scholars, and leaders from various fields gathered to pay homage to the Father of the Nation and discuss how his teachings can help address contemporary challenges.
Advocate Nandan Jha, the founder and secretary general of the Gandhi Mandela Foundation, formally welcomed the distinguished guests and attendees, reiterating the organization’s unwavering commitment to promoting and preserving Gandhi’s philosophy. In his address, Jha emphasized the necessity of keeping Gandhi’s ideals alive, stating, “Our effort is to ensure that Gandhi’s thoughts and teachings continue to inspire generations. His philosophy is not just historical; it is a guiding force for humanity even today.”
Shyam Jaju, the National President of the foundation, echoed similar sentiments, stressing Gandhi’s universal influence. “Gandhi Ji is not limited to India; the entire world respects and follows his teachings. His philosophy of truth, non-violence, and self-reliance is exemplary for people across cultures and generations,” he remarked. He further highlighted how Gandhi’s principles continue to inspire global movements advocating for peace, justice, and equality.

General BK Sharma, the Director General of USI, provided a broader perspective on contemporary global challenges. He addressed pressing concerns such as rising historical animosities, religious extremism, and environmental degradation. According to him, the world is currently at a crossroads where Gandhi’s philosophy of non-violence and unity is needed more than ever. He encouraged India to lead by example, embodying the essence of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (the world is one family) by fostering international cooperation, compassion, and sustainable development.
The event’s chief guest, Dr. Obijiofor Aginam, Director of UNESCO MGIEP, delivered a thought-provoking address on the significance of Gandhi’s principles in modern times. He spoke about the emergence of new global leaders who are dedicated to promoting peace, humanity, and knowledge. “The values that Gandhi upheld—non-violence, equality, and moral leadership—are the pillars on which progressive societies are built. It is crucial to understand that human behavior shapes the nature of governance and social structures, and Gandhi’s teachings provide a timeless blueprint for ethical leadership,” he stated.
