In a landmark decision to boost pilgrimage tourism and regional connectivity, the Ministry of Railways has sanctioned a Final Location Survey (FLS) for a new 77.96-kilometer railway line connecting Jammu to Mata Vaishno Devi Katra.
With an estimated cost of Rs 12.59 crore for the FLS, this ambitious project, to be executed by Northern Railway, lays the foundation for a transformative rail link that promises to ease access for millions of devotees visiting the revered Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine while fostering economic growth in the Jammu region.
A Lifeline for Pilgrims and Regional Development
The new rail line is poised to revolutionize travel for the millions of pilgrims who flock to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine annually, one of India’s holiest pilgrimage sites.
This initiative reflects Indian Railways’ commitment to improving accessibility to key spiritual destinations while enhancing connectivity in strategically vital regions
The existing rail connectivity to Katra, operational since 2014, has already made the shrine more accessible, but the proposed line aims to provide a more direct and efficient route, reducing travel time and easing congestion.
“This initiative reflects Indian Railways’ commitment to improving accessibility to key spiritual destinations while enhancing connectivity in strategically vital regions,” said a Northern Railway spokesperson.

Beyond its spiritual significance, the project is expected to be a catalyst for economic development in Jammu.
Improved rail infrastructure will facilitate smoother movement of goods and people, boosting local businesses, tourism, and employment opportunities.
The line’s strategic importance also aligns with Indian Railways’ broader mission to modernize and expand its network across the country, particularly in regions like Jammu and Kashmir, where connectivity remains a critical driver of progress.

The sanctioned FLS, costing Rs 12,59,17,363, marks the critical first phase of the project. Northern Railway, entrusted with overseeing the survey, will map out the precise alignment, assess land requirements, and evaluate environmental and technical challenges to ensure the line’s feasibility. This groundwork is essential for the eventual construction of the railway line, which is expected to navigate the region’s challenging hilly terrain while adhering to stringent safety and environmental standards.
“The FLS is a pivotal step in realizing this visionary project,” the Northern Railway spokesperson added. “It will provide the blueprint for a rail link that not only serves pilgrims but also strengthens the socio-economic fabric of the Jammu region.”
Addressing Challenges and Building Momentum
The Jammu-Katra corridor, nestled in the foothills of the Trikuta Mountains, presents unique engineering challenges due to its rugged topography. The FLS will play a crucial role in identifying optimal routes to minimize environmental impact and ensure cost-effective construction. Indian Railways’ expertise in executing complex projects, such as the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), underscores its capability to deliver this line with precision and efficiency.
The Jammu-Mata Vaishno Devi Katra rail line is part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to bolster infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir, a region of immense strategic and cultural significance. With over 10 million pilgrims visiting the Vaishno Devi Shrine annually, the new line will alleviate pressure on existing road and rail networks, ensuring safer and more comfortable journeys.
Additionally, the project aligns with the government’s focus on promoting tourism as a driver of economic growth, particularly in regions with untapped potential.
