Mumbai, April 12, 2026: Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, one of the most versatile and enduring voices in Indian cinema, passed away on Sunday at the age of 92 in Mumbai. She had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital a day earlier due to exhaustion and a pulmonary infection, and reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest. Her family had earlier requested privacy during her treatment.
Born Asha Mangeshkar on September 8, 1933, in Sangli in present-day Maharashtra, she was the younger sister of the iconic Lata Mangeshkar. Asha began her musical journey at a very young age in the 1940s and went on to build one of the most prolific careers in global music history.
Over an extraordinary span of more than eight decades, Asha Bhosle recorded over 12,000 songs in more than 20 languages, lending her voice to generations of actors and film eras. From the sensuous cabaret number “Piya Tu Ab To Aaja” to the rebellious anthem “Dum Maaro Dum,” and from soulful ghazals to timeless romantic melodies, her voice captured an unmatched range of emotion and style.

Renowned for her versatility and bold experimentation, Asha Bhosle redefined the scope of female playback singing in Hindi cinema. She effortlessly moved across genres—classical, pop, cabaret, folk, and ghazal—breaking stereotypes and setting new benchmarks for playback singers. Her contributions earned her numerous accolades, including multiple Filmfare Awards, with her first Best Female Playback Singer win in 1968. She was also widely recognized as one of the most recorded artists in music history.

Asha Bhosle is survived by her family, including her son Anand Bhosle and granddaughter Zanai Bhosle, who had been sharing updates during her final days.
