Manipur Police have launched an investigation into fraudulent and threatening calls targeting MLAs amid the state’s political uncertainty. Officials warn of strict legal action against those attempting to manipulate legislators.

Manipur Police have detected a series of fraudulent and threatening calls aimed at influencing members of the State Assembly, officials reported on Sunday. The issue came to light when several MLAs filed complaints about receiving misleading communications amid the ongoing political turmoil.

Authorities revealed that unknown individuals attempted to manipulate legislators, either by suggesting the formation of a new government or through direct intimidation. In response, an FIR has been registered at Imphal Police Station, and a full-scale investigation is underway. Officials have warned that those found guilty of such fraudulent activities will face strict legal action.

The incident follows the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur on February 13, which placed the state assembly under suspended animation. Since then, discontented MLAs from various political parties have been exploring the possibility of reviving the assembly and electing a new chief minister. This backdrop has reportedly triggered a surge in phone calls from various sources attempting to influence the political developments.
Incidentally. the opposition Congress party recently accused former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh of threatening MLAs to deter them from moving a no-confidence motion against his government. This was days before Biren Singh tendered his resignation.\S
Security agencies have already been put on high alert in Manipur to counter any mischief by banned terror groups here following imposition of President’s rule in the state. Many of these groups have frontal organisation which are opposing imposition of the President’s rule.
Meanwhile, multiple political parties and organizations—excluding the BJP—have blamed the ruling party’s legislators for the imposition of President’s Rule, further intensifying tensions in the state.
