Susanta Kumar Panda (Retd. Panda, who brings a wealth of experience from his extensive career in various high-profile roles within the Indian government, is expected to bring transformative leadership to the SOGF.

A Distinguished Career in Public Service
Susanta Kumar Panda’s illustrious career began in the early 2000s. From May 2003 to September 2008, he served as the Special Director at the Directorate of Enforcement. During this period, Panda played a crucial role in investigating violations of the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act (FERA) and the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). His efforts were instrumental in curbing illegal foreign exchange transactions and money laundering activities under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). His keen investigative skills and dedication to upholding the law earned him accolades and set the stage for future leadership roles.

Following his tenure at the Directorate of Enforcement, Panda continued his ascent in the government hierarchy. From January 2014 to January 2017, he served as the Chief Commissioner of Indirect Tax and Customs. In this capacity, Panda oversaw significant reforms and initiatives aimed at streamlining tax administration and enhancing compliance. His tenure was marked by efforts to modernize the customs infrastructure and improve the efficiency of tax collection, which had a positive impact on the country’s revenue system.
Role as Member of CBIC and Special Secretary
In January 2017, Panda was appointed as a Member of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) and served concurrently as a Special Secretary to the Government of India until January 2019. This period was crucial as it encompassed the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), one of India’s most significant tax reforms. Panda’s expertise and leadership were pivotal in navigating the complexities of this transition, ensuring that the new tax regime was implemented smoothly and effectively.
Since 2015, Panda has been serving as the Chief Commissioner of Service Tax, a role that underscores his deep understanding of India’s indirect tax system. His ongoing contributions in this position have been vital in optimizing service tax collections and ensuring compliance with regulatory frameworks.
