Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan has reportedly resigned from the Indian National Congress (INC) and is anticipated to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), sources revealed on Monday.

This development is another significant setback for the Congress party, following recent defections, including that of Milind Deora to the BJP. Chavan, who succeeded Vilasrao Deshmukh as Chief Minister in 2008, faced resignation in 2010 due to the Adarsh housing scam.

His departure from the INC, where he also served as the President of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) from 2014 to 2019, could further alter the political landscape in Maharashtra.
Speaking on the shocking developments in Maharashtra politics, BJP’s Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis said:
“Several leaders of opposition want to join the BJP. Many Congress leaders are in touch with us because they feel suffocated in their party.”
