The remains of 24-year-old Tanu Singh were dug up from a pit in front of her marital residence in Haryana’s Faridabad, almost two months after she was reportedly killed and interred by her father-in-law.

Tanu, hailing from Shikohabad in the Firozabad district of Uttar Pradesh, had been wedded to Arun Singh from Roshan Nagar in Faridabad for under two years. Her decayed remains were found early Friday morning in a 10-foot-deep pit situated on a public path right outside the Singh family’s residence. The body was found under a newly poured concrete slab that had been installed soon after her vanishing.

Bhoop Singh, the father-in-law, has admitted to the murder while being questioned. As per the police, Bhoop Singh reportedly strangled Tanu on the first floor of the residence during the night of April 21-22 while neither his wife Sonia nor his son Arun was there. He is thought to have disposed of the corpse in a pit that was initially excavated for water drainage.

Four In-laws taken into Custody

Images seen by India Today TV displayed a large hole in the center of the road from which Kumar’s body was taken out. Usha Kundu, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Central, stated that a complaint regarding the issue was submitted a week prior, and from that, the body was found in the pit.

Four in-laws of Tanu, comprising her husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law, and sister-in-law, have been detained for interrogation and are expected to be arrested shortly, the DCP stated.

“We are currently investigating the possible roles of other family members. The motive appears to be dowry-related, but further inquiries are ongoing,” said ACP Rajesh Kumar Lochan.

Following the alleged murder, Bhoop Singh submitted a report on April 25, stating that Tanu was missing. For weeks after, he allegedly insisted that she had “gone to the market.” Concern increased when Tanu’s sister Preeti tried to call her and got no answer.

Preeti mentioned that her sister had been experiencing dowry harassment since the beginning of her marriage. She mentioned that shortly after the wedding in July 2023, Tanu went back to her mother’s house and remained there for more than a year.

Tanu’s family accused in-laws of dowry harassment

Tanu’s family stated that Kumar’s in-laws consistently harassed and abused her concerning dowry. The trial became so severe that she spent the initial year of her marriage living at her mother’s house. Her father, Hakim, claimed that she came back to Faridabad only after a panchayat intervened. Nonetheless, the issue was still far from settled.

On April 23, residents report that they witnessed an earthmover showing up near the home. Arun Singh and Bhoop Singh excavated a pit about 10 feet deep under the guise of building a drainage system. Two days later, on April 25, Bhoop Singh visited the police to report Tanu as missing.

Power Corridors, as its name implies, delves into realpolitik—examining the essence of influential circles, unraveling the intricacies of political maneuvers, and exploring the pulse of the state’s affairs. However, it transcends mere power dynamics, encompassing a broader spectrum of issues beyond the confines of Delhi’s elite circles.

For PC, which is published by the Interactive Forum on Indian Economy, not only highlights the issues of the day but also throws up what ought to be the subjects that the country should be debating about. It reports about the plans, strategies, and agendas of politicians and others; it also sets the agenda for the nation.
