Diljit clarified that the decision to release Sardaar Ji 3 abroad came after producers realized the situation had changed drastically since filming. “We don’t control geopolitical events,” he said, expressing support for the producers and respect for his co-star’s professionalism.

New Delhi, June 24 —Punjabi superstar Diljit Dosanjh has broken his silence over mounting backlash for his upcoming film Sardaar Ji 3, which has been barred from release in India amidst surging diplomatic and public tensions between India and Pakistan. The film, which features Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in a leading role, will now see an international-only release on June 27, 2025.
The controversy erupted on Sunday after the trailer was released online, drawing sharp reactions from Indian social media users and film industry voices. Many criticized the casting of Pakistani actors, citing the recent Pahalgam terror attack in which ten Indian Army personnel were killed, allegedly by Pakistan-based terror groups. The film also stars Pakistani actors Nasir Chinyoti, Daniel Khawar, and Saleem Albela.
Reacting to the criticism, Dosanjh told BBC Asian Network that Sardaar Ji 3 was filmed months ago, before the escalation in hostilities. “We shot this in February when the situation was stable. After that, a lot changed that was beyond our control. The producers have invested a lot of money, and since an Indian release is not viable now, they’ve decided on an overseas release. I fully support that decision,” he said.

The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) had earlier urged the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to deny clearance to the film, citing national sentiment and calling the release “insensitive” under current circumstances.

Dosanjh, widely known for blending music and film with international appeal, added that his experience working with Hania Aamir was positive. “She’s a thorough professional. I respect her work and her privacy,” he said, stressing that their interactions were respectful and minimal.
This is not the first time Indo-Pak cultural collaborations have sparked controversy. In the past, actors like Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan faced similar bans following cross-border incidents. Bollywood and regional cinema have often found themselves caught in the crossfire of diplomatic rows, with industry bodies and public sentiment influencing content regulation.
With Sardaar Ji 3 now limited to international audiences, Dosanjh’s comments seek to quell the storm, but the episode has once again reignited debate over art, nationalism, and where the line should be drawn.
