Noida: Thousands of people reside in high-rise apartments in UP’s Noida and Greater Noida, where they take elevators to get to their residences. Over the past few months, there has been a sharp rise in lift-related incidents in various Noida and Greater Noida societies. Recently, the lift in Paras Teria Society, Noida Sector 137, broke through the roof and reached the top due to a brake failure. Nonetheless, it was lucky that there was not a serious mishap. Merely three or four persons sustained minor wounds. In an elevator accident earlier in August 2023, 70-year-old Sushila Devi perished as a result of a broken cable. However, did you know that this year the Yogi government of Uttar Pradesh introduced the UP Lift and Escalator Bill? The safety of those residing in apartments and flats was taken into consideration when this bill was introduced.
UP Government Enacts Lift Act 2024 to Address Lift Collapse Incidents in Noida and Greater Noida
The UP government enacted the Lift Act 2024 in response to the gravity of the lift collapse incidents in multi-story buildings in Noida and Greater Noida. According to this, the building owner has 24 hours to notify the DM, the relevant authority, and the local police station in the event of a lift accident. Local authorities and development bodies will carry out the law. The lift installation company must register in accordance with this Act. Additionally, it is now mandatory for lift installation companies to perform routine emergency drills.
New Lift Act Mandates CCTV, Automatic Rescue Devices, and Regular Maintenance for Elevators
Installing CCTV cameras and automatic rescue devices in elevators is now required as per the new Act. Additionally, signing an Annual Maintenance Contract is now required, which means that the builder and AOA will need to get the lift inspected on a regular basis and report any issues to the appropriate authorities. Mock drills will need to be held twice a year in case of emergency to make sure that someone becomes trapped and escapes safely.
Any officer appointed by the state government will need to be made aware of the lift after it is installed and prior to its use. A certificate from the technical team or the AMC technical team will also need to be obtained in the event that a fault with the lift needs to be fixed. Each registration will be valid for the duration of the escalator or lift’s lifetime.
