January 16, 2026: In a major boost to public healthcare infrastructure in the national capital, Delhi Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena has approved the creation of 4,002 new posts for doctors and medical staff across four government hospitals to support a significant expansion in bed capacity.
The newly sanctioned posts will cater to an additional 1,515 beds created in Guru Gobind Singh Hospital at Raghubir Nagar, Ambedkar Nagar Hospital at Dakshinpuri, Sant Durbal Nath Ji Trauma Centre at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Mangolpuri, and Shri Dada Dev Maitri Avum Shishu Chikitsalaya at Dwarka.
The posts include surgeons, senior resident doctors, specialists, staff nurses, nursing attendants, technicians, paramedical personnel, administrative officers, clerical staff, and security personnel. The expansion is expected to enhance patient care, reduce the workload on doctors, streamline recruitment, and improve the overall functioning of government hospitals.
As these four hospitals are spread across different parts of Delhi, the move is also expected to ease pressure on major central hospitals such as GTB, Lok Nayak, GB Pant, and other government-run facilities in central Delhi.
The Health Department of the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) had proposed the creation of these posts after new blocks were constructed and additional beds made operational without a corresponding increase in manpower. Following scrutiny by the Administrative Reforms Department and the Finance Department, the proposal received the Lt. Governor’s approval.
Of the 4,002 posts sanctioned, 3,031 will be filled through permanent recruitment, while 971 positions will be outsourced.

The largest share—1,737 posts—has been created at the Sant Durbal Nath Ji Trauma Centre at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, where a new 362-bed trauma block was inaugurated on September 17, 2025. Ambedkar Nagar Hospital will receive 666 additional posts to support 400 new beds. Guru Gobind Singh Hospital, which has added 472 beds, will get 1,491 new posts, while Shri Dada Dev Maitri Avum Shishu Chikitsalaya will receive 520 posts to meet requirements for an upcoming expansion of 281 beds.
The creation of these additional posts will involve a financial outlay of approximately ₹408 crore, for which budgetary provisions have already been made.
Officials pointed out that despite substantial increases in bed capacity, several hospitals had remained underutilised in the past due to a lack of manpower planning. Similar issues persist across 24 hospitals initiated during the previous AAP government, many of which are affected by delays, cost overruns, and ongoing inquiries. However, the Health Department clarified that no inquiry pertains to the four hospitals where the new posts have now been sanctioned.
